Description
I love finding these Red Crossbills, many times, I mistake them for pine cones, until they move. They are so interesting to watch as they pry the cones open to retrieve the seeds inside. Their sounds are pretty unique and when there's a large flock, they are easy to figure out they are around. This was one of my favourite encounters with them, they were flying all around, often landing on the ground, eating the salt the highways truck put down. Standing still in the bank allowed me to really get a good look at them, and sometimes, they flew in close to where I was standing, to maybe get a good look at me too. They don't stay still for long though, so you have to be fast.
